Blog Assingment 10

I am currently reading the Hunger Games (yes I got hooked) by Suzanne Collins, the first novel in the series. A major part of the journey that Katniss is involved in is the "call to adventure". Each district has 2 teens who go and take place in the Hunger Games. Their name is placed in the draw and on the day of the announcing, the person's name who is called has to take place in the Hunger Games. There is an exception. If someone else decides to take the place of one of the 2 contestants who's name is drawn , they are now a contender in the Hunger Games. It was Katniss' sister first year in the draw for the Hunger Games and unfortunately her name is drawn. Katniss doesn't know how to react but she knows that her sister is not ready to take on such big of a challenge. Willingly Katniss takes her sister's place and is now a competitor in the Hunger Games.
"I volunteer!" I gasp. "I volunteer as tribute!" (Collins The Hunger Games 22). This quote directly states the crossing of the threshold, the acceptance of the call to adventure. Katniss has accepted her journey.

The novel I am currently reading is 'Me and the Blondes' by Teresa Toten.

The protagonist, Sophie, lives in Toronto in a small condominium with her mother. The condo is very small for the two of them, but it works for now. Sophie attends Northern Heights Collegiate and is close friends with Madison, Kit and Sarah. To be exact, she has attended 8 different schools in the past 6 years! Sophie is a bright and honest 14 year old girl. The money is scarce in Sophie's home, relying on her mother's real estate business can be difficult. Sophie's father lives in prison in Kingston and Sophie has a very difficult time speaking with him, as does her mother. Sophie's friends are her mentors in the story but can be shapeshifters too. Her mother is the main mentor providing her with support and advice.

"I feel as if my mom is my rock. I feel safe and comforted when I am with her."       (Toten,Me and the Blondes 46)

Blog Assignment 8

I am currently reading "Me and the Blondes" by Teresa Toten.

Question: Are 'The Blondes' truly good and honest friends to Sophie?

From what I have read so far they seem to be great friends. Meanwhile, by the way Sophie's mom talks about 'The Blondes" and how much she detests them, I have a feeling that shortly the blondes will back stab Sophie. It just seems that in every novel the friends (shapeshifters, I guess) seem to be so nice then turn evil; that is exactly what is happening (I think, from my predictions).

I chose this picture because it represents Sophie and 'The Blondes' relationship so far in this novel.

The book I have been reading is called "Me and the Blondes" by Tersea Toten. The character that has stuck out while reading this book is Magda Kandinsky, Sophie's mother and 'mama' is the mentor of this story. She has guided Sophie through her battles she has had to face like going to a new school, meeting new friends and most other challenges a teen girl has to face in high school.

Mama kissed the top of my head. "You vill fix dem. I have high hopes, high apple pies in da sky hopes." (Teresa Toten, Me and the Blondes, page 47) Sophie's mother always is looking out for Sophie and supporting her every decision she makes. In this part of the novel Sophie was just about to attend her last basketball tryout hoping to make the team and her mother was right there beside her supporting her and her teammates. This is why I believe 'mama' is the mentor of the story because she aids and guides Sophie to make the best decisions.

-P.S.- 'Mama' is Bulgarian so the she has a accent, so no, I did not misspell my direct quote.
